Sommelier (5 days work)

The American Club

The Sommelier assists members with beverage selections that pair well with their meal or their palate. They should have an exceptional palate and exemplary member/beverage service skills. The Sommelier will have an extensive understanding of wines, their composition, how they’re made and how they affect food on the menu. The Sommelier is in charge of purchasing the wines and curating the wine list based on members preferences and buying trends. The sommelier handles all beverage inventory and directly reports to the ADFB & DoFB.

 

Job Description 

  • To work closely with the Outlet Management team and members
  • Assist the Outlet Managers and teams on day-to-day operations
  • Support and work with the ADFB on beverage promotions and promoting beverage sales to drive budget requirements and member trends
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the wine list and beverage offerings ensuring members and guests are advised of the most appropriate wine for their meal and budget. Documenting members preferences for the greater team knowledge
  • Work closely with the ADFB to achieve the Club’s Mission Statement, Guiding Principles and Service Standards into the operation and ensure the primary objective of maintaining high standards of operation
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the wine list and beverage offerings ensuring guests are advised of the most appropriate wine for their meal and budget 
  • Ensure that the Beverage operations and Service standards are consistent to the Club’s policies and procedures
  • Provide services that exceed member expectations, handling escalated beverage concern where required
  • Provide training to service colleagues on the wine list and successful pairings. Contribute to ongoing wine knowledge and training. Attend department external trainings and scheduled briefings and meetings as required

Qualifications & Skills

 

  • Holder of Level 3 WSET / Court of Master Sommeliers or equivalent Sommelier qualifications. Complete knowledge of wine pairing, wine list, and cocktail and beverage menus of wine industry
  • A minimum 3-4 years relevant experience in 5-star International Hotel, Private Club or Restaurant
  • A good level of spoken and written English and spoken Cantonese
  • Good organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Good interpersonal skills and excellent service delivery
  • Good physique, able to stand at least 9 hours in restaurant areas; lift over 50 pounds on an intermittent basis; able to bend, stoop lift, reach, push, pull, twist, walk, crouch, and squat
